the magnesium pool
a heated magnesium pool, mineral-soft on the skin — kept cool through summer, toasty come winter. swim at first light, or sink in once the paddocks have fallen quiet.
an accidental sanctuary in the byron hinterland — hand-built from old horse stables, lived in slowly, and lent to anyone who needs to stop.
this is not a hotel. it's a barn that became a home, that became a quiet sort of refuge — for couples on the long way back to each other, and for families remembering how to be still.
after my husband died, the rooms grew quiet and the garden grew loud. for a long time i didn't know what to do with the space — only that i couldn't fill it with grief and call it living.
so we kept building. the old horse stables became a barn, the barn became a home, and the home became — almost by accident, by drift and instinct and a great many hours laying brick and sanding wood — somewhere other people came to stay.
every piece here was found, restored, or made by hand. the breeze-block walls. the antique olive vats from Europe by the door. the suspended fireplace that rotates with the light. the two claw-foot tubs in the open air. nothing was bought to fill a space; everything earned its place.
and beside me through all of it: bentley the rotti and diesel the kelpie cross. they were my rock when nothing else held. they made the rule that's stayed since — dogs welcome, people tolerated.
i don't run an airbnb. i keep a sanctuary, and i lend it to people who — like me, once — need somewhere soft to land.

small ceremonies the barn invites — the kind that empty a mind without asking it to.

a heated magnesium pool, mineral-soft on the skin — kept cool through summer, toasty come winter. swim at first light, or sink in once the paddocks have fallen quiet.

two vintage claw-foot tubs in the open air — one open to the stars, one under cover to watch the cows in the paddock next door. one hot, one cold; steam in the trees.

an open fire pit with unlimited wood, and a suspended fireplace indoors that turns slowly with the room. light one when the light leaves, and let the evening go soft.

river-stone steps drop to a spring-fed swimming hole on byron creek — lovingly regenerated and now home to platypus, water dragons, turtles, and remarkable bird life. an infrared sauna for after, an outdoor shower for the in-between.

a handcrafted shipping container, lined floor to ceiling in parquetry woodwork — its own ensuite, kitchenette, and a covered deck with hanging chairs, a daybed, and an antique footed bathtub. a world within the world.

bangalow village is one minute away — bakery, slow coffee, galleries and homeware shops full of beautiful things. byron bay is twenty minutes the other way, for beach and oysters. both there when you want them; mostly, you won't.

the practical bits — so the only surprises are the good kind.
self check-in by key safe, any time from 3pm. checkout by 10am — though the mornings are the best part.
dogs are the point, really — paws and claws friendly, always. just send word when you book (a small pet fee applies). house rules: off the beds and lounges, never left home alone.
starlink wifi, two smart tvs, a full kitchen down to the oil and spices, two bbqs, beach towels & unlimited firewood.
reverse-cycle air-conditioning in all three barn bedrooms and the living, ceiling fans throughout for natural airflow, double-insulated against the heat.
ample off-street parking — rv and caravan travellers welcome too, with plenty of room to park up, stay and play. it's properly rural out here, so the odd service hiccup comes with the quiet.
no parties or events without a word first; hush after 10pm. otherwise, make yourself entirely at home.

“Such a unique and beautiful space — warm, homey, and styled so perfectly. We had wine watching the sunset and platypus play. I don’t think it’s possible to not love this stay.”
